Aug 13, 2018 - Alert from WVOTA re OTD mandadate

 News alert:

AOTA Board of Directors have passed a new motion regarding the mandate to transition to one point of entry (i.e. transitioning to an OTD). AOTA BOD has moved to pause the decision to move to a one point entry for OT at this time.   The move to an OTD has generate a lot of discussion and AOTA has moved to pause the transition until the Representative Assembly can act on the issue.  WVU, as the only  educational program in the state conferring an OT degree is currently opting to proceed with the plan to move to an OTD program.

This does not affect the previous decision to put into abeyance (pause) the decision to maintain two points of entry (Bachelors and Associate) for occupational therapy assistants.  The OTA degree will, at this time, remain unchanged and Univ of Charleston's program is currently maintaining their program as an Associate degree..

This is a complex issue and AOTA (your national membership organization who represents your voice) and ACOTE (authority and responsibility to set entry level educational requirements for the profession) are discussing the issue.  WVOTA is your membership organization in WV and represents the voice of  Occupational Therapy Practitioners members in WV at the national level.

If you would like to know more, WVOTA's Representative to the Assembly, Diana Davis, has provided a link to the message from AOTA:

Please encourage your colleagues to become members of WVOTA and AOTA so their voices can be added to this critical conversation.

Aug 13, 2018 - News from WVOTA RA

Message from the WVOTA RA:

The OTD mandate, announced by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE)  in August of 2017 continues to be a serious point of discussion within the profession.  Late Friday, the AOTA Board of Directors passed a motion to put the mandate into abeyance (hit the pause button) until the Representative Assembly can address member concerns.  This follows ACOTE reaffirming their intention to move to the OTD as the  entry level degree for occupational therapists and to maintain two points of entry (Bachelors and Associate) for occupational therapy assistants.

This is a complex issue involving who has the authority and responsibility to set entry level educational requirements.  I encourage you to  follow this link: https://www.aota.org/AboutAOTA/Get-Involved/BOD/News/2018/Message-From-AOTA-Board-Directors-OTD-OTA-Mandates.aspx to read the statement released by AOTA that explains the issues and concerns.

I am more than willing to discuss the current situation with any concerned OT or OTAs and am looking forward to the process that the RA will undertake to explore entry level degrees. I can be reached at dmdavis@hsc.wvu.edu.

I will continute to represent the AOTA members residing in WV during this process.

Jul 27, 2018 - Welcome to our new WVOTA Secretary
Thank you to Kelley Ware, past secretary of WVOTA. Kelley has decided to step away from the role of secretary in order to bring more occupational balance to her life -- Kelley will be active in transitioning the role to our new incoming secretary. Per our bylaws, when a position is vacated, the board will appoint an interim to fill the position until the next election cycle. The members of the board acknowledge the duties of the secretary have expanded over the years. To that end, two members have been appointed to fill this important position. We are pleased to announce Jacob Greenfield will be serving as Corresponding Secretary and Amy Wix will serve as Social Secretary. We're up to some exciting work at WVOTA -- if you are interested in volunteering or being more involved in small tasks or ready for more leadership in the state, we want to hear from you!
